When something feels wrong, the hardest part is often knowing where to start. Should you see your family doctor, book a specialist, call a therapist or head straight to urgent care? Choosing the right service first saves time, reduces worry and gets you the right answers sooner.
Start with your family doctor
For most new symptoms, ongoing conditions and routine check-ups, your family doctor is the best first stop. They know your history, can examine you, order tests and treat most everyday problems. If you need a specialist, they can refer you and share your notes so you do not have to repeat your story.
When to see a specialist or therapist
Specialists focus on one part of the body, such as the heart, skin, joints or brain. Therapists such as physiotherapists and dietitians help you recover, move better and build healthier habits. If you already know the area of concern, or your doctor suggests it, booking with the right specialist can speed up your care.
When it cannot wait
Some symptoms need urgent attention. Chest pain, sudden weakness on one side of the body, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding or a sudden, severe headache are signs to call emergency services straight away. For problems that are urgent but not life-threatening, such as a high fever or a minor injury, call your clinic first for same-day advice.
You do not have to know the answer before you call. A good care team will help you find the right door.
Questions to ask before you book
A few quick questions help you pick the right service:
- Is this a new problem or a change in an old one?
- Is it getting worse quickly or staying the same?
- Does it affect one clear area, such as skin, joints or teeth?
- Do I need a test, a treatment plan or simply advice?
- Would a video appointment be enough for a first chat?
Keep a short note on your phone with your medicines, allergies and past conditions. It makes every appointment faster and safer, whichever service you choose.
